The commonality of artists across disciplinary is solitude. Living in solitude means being luxuriously immersed in your passion, be it sculpture, photography or dance. The process of becoming aware of the fullness of your own presence can be painful. It can be a tug of war between being fearful of loneliness and having a strong desire for solitude. Solitude provides artists strength to embark on a journey from one point in life to another. After all, no one can guide us but ourselves; we ourselves must walk the path. The journey of an artist begins by cracking the eggshell painfully and slowly. In a world that poses challenges to every human being, the artist, who is reborn after experiencing solitude, is ready to go on a journey to rebel against traditions and discover oneself. For the artist, life can come and go like a feather in the wind; thus, one must hold fast to our dreams and soar with one’s own wings. Fly high, as art is unlimited in space and indefinite in duration.
As part of Peer to Pier project for Dutch Days in Hong Kong 2016, May Yeung presents Ichi (One), encouraging artists and viewers to embrace solitude and pursue their dreams.
